Description
The Franklin Monument is an oval chest tomb located in the churchyard, 53 metres south of the south aisle of the Church of St. Mary. It dates from the 19th century and is made of limestone. The tomb features a moulded table and base with raised panels divided into four quarters, all topped by a short pyramid supported by acanthus brackets. It commemorates John Franklin and his wife Martha, who both died in 1831. John Franklin was a notable monumental mason in the area, and his work can be found on tablets throughout east Wiltshire and the surrounding region.
