Description

Manor House is a building from the late 16th century, with an addition dated 1682, and it was altered around 1900. It is constructed of limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with stone slate roofs. The house has two storeys and attics, featuring five bays. There is a central cross passage leading to a lateral hall on the right, with a staircase at the upper end at the rear. The building has wings that extend from the first and fifth bays to the rear.

A central two-storey porch has a round torus moulded arch, while the inner door is from the 19th century. The exterior includes a heavy string course and an eaves corbel table, with a flat roof and low parapet. The main block has four-light ovolo moulded windows on the ground floor, with continuous string courses and label mouldings on the upper floors. The central and end bays are raised as gables, featuring coped apexes and three-light mullioned windows. There are large external stacks at both ends, with four brick diagonal shafts on the left end, three on the right, and four additional brick stacks, all of which were lowered around 1900. A staircase protrudes as a tower at the rear, along with 19th to 20th-century extensions.

On the right side, there is an end gable porch marked with the date 1682 and a Sun Insurance mark, No 425563. The interior was altered around 1900 and has been recently modernised. Originally, the property belonged to Malmesbury Abbey until the Dissolution and later passed through the Bennet and Jay families before being rebuilt by Lord Chandos in the late 16th century. It stands as an imposing building in a picturesque setting.
