Description

The Maskelyne monument is a chest tomb in arched form located in the churchyard against the south transept wall of the Church of St. Mary. It dates from the early 19th century and is made of limestone. The tomb features a hipped and moulded table, with recessed moulded panels and a plinth. It is situated among other monuments in a former railed enclosure. The monument commemorates Nevil Maskelyne, the Astronomer Royal, who died in 1811. A tablet dedicated to him can also be found within the church.
