Description

The stable blocks and garden wall on the north side of Zeals House are likely from the late 18th century. Constructed in Flemish bond brick with Welsh slate hipped roofs, these buildings form a cohesive structure around a courtyard. The single-storey, three-bay east block features a central round-arched opening that is partly blocked, flanked by doors with round-arched heads and six fielded panels on either side. It has a brick impost band and pilasters, with side bays that contain cross windows with flat arches and a pediment above the center, which includes an oculus. Attached to the right side is a lean-to cart shed with segmental-headed double doors. The rear of the east block has segmental-headed doorways and inserted pivot-hung casements.

The west block shares similar architectural features, but it has had a pair of elliptical-headed double carriage doors inserted into the right of the central arched opening. The right return of this block has five blind or blocked segmental-headed windows, and there is a lean-to cart shed on the left return with segmental-headed planked doors. Inside, the stables retain cast iron and wooden loose boxes and stalls.
