Description
The Black Dog Lodges and gate piers, located at the north end of the avenue leading to Zeals House, date from the late 18th century. They are constructed of painted Flemish bond brick and feature pyramidal tiled roofs. The pair of square lodges flanks the gate piers that provide access to the drive. Each lodge has a front facing the main road, which includes a pointed two-light casement window, while the rear also features pointed casements. The pointed planked doors are oriented towards the drive, and there are lean-to extensions on the sides away from the drive, each with pointed planked doors and two-light casements. The lodges are connected to rusticated stone gate piers that have moulded cappings and lead statues of Talbot dogs. The front is enhanced by curved walls with swept coping and end piers.
