5/16 The Estate Yard at Bowood House, with attached lodge and gates

Service court to Bowood House, mid C19, rubble stone with brick dressings and slate roofs, partly lean-to against earlier rubble stone enclosing walls. Courtyard plan with continuous ranges on 3 sides, former store-rooms, sculleries, coach-house and fire-engine house. Doors and glazing bar windows in brick surrounds. Covered entry at north end of east range. Against west wall, half- octagonal game-larder with louvred openings in brick surrounds and louvred octagonal timber lantern. Attached to west side of east wall is lean-to former coach-house and lodge, with 6 ashlar Roman Doric columns, 3 bays still open, the rest enclosed. Lodge south end abuts ramped ashlar screen wall to C19 corniced gatepiers with heavy timber gates, wall ramped up on other side to west wall of Bowood House. Pedestrian gate to right of main gates with 6-panel door, matching blank recess to left of gates.
