Description
The Estate Yard at Bowood House, dating from the mid-19th century, serves as a service court for Bowood House. It is constructed of rubble stone with brick dressings and features slate roofs, with part of it leaning against earlier rubble stone enclosing walls. The layout is a courtyard plan with continuous ranges on three sides, which include former store-rooms, sculleries, a coach-house, and a fire-engine house. The doors and windows have brick surrounds with glazing bars. There is a covered entry at the north end of the east range.
On the west wall, there is a half-octagonal game-larder that has louvred openings in brick surrounds and a louvred octagonal timber lantern. Attached to the west side of the east wall is a lean-to that was formerly a coach-house and lodge, featuring six ashlar Roman Doric columns. Three bays remain open while the rest are enclosed. The lodge at the south end is adjacent to a ramped ashlar screen wall that leads to 19th-century corniced gatepiers with heavy timber gates. The wall ramps up on the other side to the west wall of Bowood House. To the right of the main gates, there is a pedestrian gate with a six-panel door, and a matching blank recess is located to the left of the gates.
