Description
Old Well Cottage is a pair of estate cottages from the early 19th century, located on the west side of Devizes Road in Calne Without. Constructed from squared ironstone rubble, they feature a thatched roof with a brick ridge stack that has four short diagonal shafts. The cottages are designed in a picturesque style, each standing two stories high with two windows on the upper floor. The first floor has two 2-light mullion windows, while the ground floor includes a door set in a stone surround and a canted stone bay with a configuration of 1-3-1 lights. The door for No 14 is on the right, and for No 15, it is on the left. Both cottages have small-paned iron casements, and the end walls feature a ground floor 2-light window with a hoodmould. Although a house is indicated on this site in a map by J. Powell from 1763, the current cottages appear to be later in style. These thatched cottages exemplify the character of an estate village in the picturesque manner.
