Description

Little Trodgers is an early 19th-century cottage, originally part of the Bowood estate and located on Sandy Lane, east of Devizes. The cottage is constructed of squared ironstone with a thatched half-hipped roof and a stack at the south end. It is built in a picturesque cottage style and is one and a half storeys high. The windows are stone mullioned with hoodmoulds and iron small-paned casements. There is a 2-light window in the upper storey, set beneath a raised eyebrow, and a 3-light window to the ground floor on the right-hand side. The roof slopes down over what was formerly an open verandah, now filled in with timber posts. A 20th-century door is present, and the original door, set within a stone surround, remains. The north end wall has two-light windows on each floor. The cottage is shown on a 1763 map by J. Powell, but its current style is later. The thatched cottages of Sandy Lane represent a remarkable example of an estate village built in the picturesque manner.
