Description
Copse Cottage is an early 19th-century cottage located on the Bowood estate. It is built from squared ironstone rubble and features a thatched half-hipped roof with a ridge stack. The cottage is one and a half storeys tall and designed in a picturesque style. It has stone mullion windows fitted with small-paned iron casements.
On the east end, there is a two-light window with a hoodmould above a canted stone bay that has a 1-3-1 light configuration. The north side features an upper two-light window beneath an eyebrow and a lean-to with a stone slate verandah supported by timber posts. To the right of the door, which is set in a flush stone surround, there are 20th-century casements. A 20th-century extension has been added to the west end.
The south side has a two-light window under an eyebrow to the left, a single light at eaves level, and leaded timber casements on the ground floor to the right. The thatched cottages of Sandy Lane are noted as an outstanding example of an estate village in the picturesque style.
