Description
Apple Tree Cottage is a Grade II listed building that was originally part of a row of three cottages from the early 19th century, associated with the Bowood estate. The structure is made of rubble stone and features a thatched half-hipped roof with two ridge stacks. It stands one and a half storeys tall and is designed in a picturesque cottage style.
The cottage has two-light stone mullion windows with leaded lights, which likely replaced earlier iron casements. It also features flush quoins and an off-centre door set in a stone surround, accompanied by a lean-to stone-slate porch. To the right of the porch is a one-window range, while to the left is a two-window range, with the lower windows adorned with hoodmoulds and the upper windows featuring eyebrow arches. The left and right sides have 20th-century two-light windows that have replaced doors.
The south end wall includes a 1-3-1-light canted bay with a two-light window and hoodmould above. Although a building is indicated on the 1763 J. Powell map, the current structure appears to be later in style. The thatched cottages of Sandy Lane represent an exceptional example of an estate village designed in the picturesque manner.
