Description
Loaf Cottage is an early 19th-century estate cottage situated on Sandy Lane, west of Calne, without Devizes. The cottage is constructed of squared ironstone rubble with a thatched half-hipped roof and a ridge stack. It is built in a picturesque style, featuring flush stone-mullioned windows with leaded lights, likely replacing earlier iron casements.
The front (east) of the cottage has a projecting eyebrow over a two-light upper window and a centrally positioned front door within a 20th-century porch. A three-light window is set within a stone-slate verandah to the left. Flush quoins are present. The north end has a canted bay window with a 1-3-1-light arrangement and a 20th-century window above. A hipped rear wing extends from the north-west corner, also with a 20th-century window. On the south side are a two-light and a three-light window, both with hoodmoulds.
The cottage is depicted on J. Powell’s map of 1763, although it appears to have been built later in its current style. As part of the Sandy Lane cottages, it exemplifies a picturesque estate village.
