Description
Hawthorne Cottage and its outbuildings are a house dating from the mid 18th century, with an extension added in the early 19th century. The original structure is built from rubble stone, while the extension features ashlar stone. The roofs are covered with stone tiles and imitation stone tiles. The building has two storeys and an attic, with end wall stacks and coped gables.
The original main front faced east and includes one upper 2-light flush mullion window with a dripstone, and one ground floor 3-light window with a dripstone, along with a flush stone doorcase. The right side of the house is obscured by the 19th-century extension, which has a lean-to roof and a platband that wraps around to the north front, now the main entrance.
A roughly symmetrical appearance has been created, with the original north end wall on the right and the extension's north wall on the left, which has a partly dummy wall to conceal the differing roof pitch. The building features a coped gable and a pair of ashlar stacks with a short parapet between them. There are two 2-light mullion windows in the attic and first floor; the right windows are 18th century with dripstones, while the attic window on the left is a dummy. The ground floor features an 18th-century chamfered doorcase with a hood on brackets, flanked by 19th-century canted bay windows. There is also a range of outbuildings located at the rear.
