Description
The war memorial in Biddestone was built in 1920 and is designed to honor local men who died in the World Wars. It features a granite base topped with a cross made of local limestone. The shaft and cross are octagonal in shape and stand approximately 3.2 meters high. They are raised on a chamfered plinth with pyramidal stops and a three-stepped platform made of rubble stone. The cross has three arms that are decorated with cusping, and the shaft is similarly embellished. The plinth is inscribed on all four sides, with the south side stating: "IN MEMORY OF / BIDDESTONE MEN / WHO DIED IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914-19." The other three sides list the names of those who fell in both World Wars.
The memorial was dedicated in a ceremony in 1920, attended by local clergy and dignitaries, and it commemorates eleven men from the village who died in the First World War and three who lost their lives in World War II. This limestone cross, standing over 3 meters high, serves as a significant monument in a prominent location on the village green, reflecting the historical and cultural importance of war memorials in small communities across the country.
