Description

Curlew, Holly and Hawthorn Cottages are a group of dwellings, originally dating to the 17th century, but largely rebuilt in the early to mid-19th century. The cottages are constructed of coursed millstone grit, with some parts rendered, and hammer-dressed stone. They have quoins and a stone slate roof, topped with a finial on the south-east side.

The south-west elevation has, on the ground floor, an original doorway, now partly blocked, featuring a chamfered surround and a Tudor arch under a deep lintel inscribed "RC 1678 Entrance" and two single-light windows. The first floor has four single-light windows. The north-east elevation, which is rendered, has a ground-floor doorway, chamfered, with quoins and a deep lintel with a Tudor arch, along with two large single-light windows with chamfered surrounds, likely dating to the 19th century. The first floor mirrors the ground floor’s four single-light windows. Hawthorn cottage presents a ground-floor entrance and one three-light stone mullioned window, with a first-floor window of five lights. A single-storey lean-to extension is attached to the north-west gable.
