Description

Two chest tombs from the 18th century are located in the churchyard about 15 meters south of the south porch of St Mary. The first, a memorial to William Hampton from the mid-18th century, features two shield plaques on each side, cherub heads below, fluted piers, and a moulded base and cornice topped with a ridged capstone. It has a cartouche at the west end and decorations of a skull, bones, and an hour-glass on the east side. The second tomb, a late 18th-century Hampton memorial, includes a large oval plaque, cherub heads in the spandrels, floral drops on each side, and fluted baluster angles. It also has a moulded base and cornice that breaks forward over the plaque, with an inscription on the north side dedicated to Jane Hampton.
