Description
There are two chest tombs located in the churchyard south of the south aisle of the Church of Saint Mary and Saint Ethelbert, dating from the mid-18th century and made of ashlar.
The first tomb, which is an unidentified memorial, features a large oval plaque on the south side and is flanked by egg-and-dart bordered fielded panels. It has a raised fielded plaque on the north side with fielded panels on either side, and floral drops at the chamfered angles. The tomb has a moulded base and cornice that breaks forward over the south plaque.
The second tomb is the Horton memorial, which includes richly scrolled angle piers. On the north side, there is a sunk plaque with an egg-and-dart border and a scrolled strip to the left, while the right side has a blank panel. The end plaques are fielded, and the south panel is also fielded, with fielded strips flanking it. This tomb commemorates James Horton, who died in 1762.
