Description

The Potterne War Memorial is a tall structure made of Portland stone, located outside the Church of St Mary, which is a Grade I listed building, in the north-east corner of the churchyard. The memorial features a blind wheel-head cross atop an octagonal shaft with a moulded foot, all resting on a plinth. This plinth is an octagonal drum with a shallow circular head and is supported by a three-stepped octagonal base, with the upper step being deeper than the two lower steps.

Around the circular head of the plinth, the inscription "SEE YE TO IT THAT THESE SHALL NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN" is carved in relief. The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the base states "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOUR OF/ POTTERNE MEN WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1919." The names of the fallen are inscribed on other faces of the plinth. Additionally, a rectangular bronze plaque affixed to the upper step of the base commemorates those who fell in the Second World War, stating "ALSO OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 - 1945/ (NAMES)."
