Description
Caretaker's cottage at Chippenham Cemetery, built around 1854, is now used as an office. The structure is made of squared and coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and ridge stacks, topped with a slate roof. It has a T-shaped plan with a lean-to at the rear and is designed in the Gothic Revival style.
The cottage is a single-story building with a two-window range and features a gabled roof similar to the nearby cemetery chapels, characterized by steep pitches and coped gable ends. The entrance is located on the left side. To the left, there is a forward-facing gable that includes a small lancet window above a two-light splayed bay with a hipped stone roof and quatrefoils in the diagonally square tracery. On the right side, there is a two-light window with trefoil heads.
A prominent heavy stack is positioned on the central ridge, which is offset and features two octagonal shafts with moulded tops. A similar single-shafted stack is located at the rear. The rear right gable contains a quatrefoil in an oculus above a large shallow pointed-arched stone-mullioned three-light window. Inside, the cottage has been altered, but original fireplaces are reported to remain behind boarding.
