Description
Gate Farmhouse is a former turnpike house located on London Road, dating from around 1830 to 1840, and was extended as a farmhouse in the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. It is comprised of one and two storeys.
The original turnpike house is a single-storey structure with a three-sided canted front made of ashlar. The central door is now blocked, and there is a sash window with a hoodmould on each side. A stack is located on the roof hip. The north side wall is red brick and has three similar sash windows in stone surrounds with hoodmoulds. The south side features two similar windows, one of which retains its original 12-pane sash, as well as a lean-to.
At the rear, there is a two-storey range with a hipped slate roof and a ridge stack at the original south end. This part of the building is also red brick with ashlar dressings and has stretcher-bond brickwork, representing an unusually early example of cavity-wall construction. The north side includes a one-window range of 16-pane sashes in ashlar surrounds with hoodmoulds, and to the right, there is a 4-panel door in an ashlar surround with a cornice on consoles. The east end has a similar one-window range to the right, followed by a straight joint and another one-window range of similar 12-pane sashes.
