Description
Turnpike Cottage is a turnpike toll house dating from the early 19th century, with a 20th-century extension. It is constructed of painted stone rubble with rendered sides and features a grouted scantle slate roof topped with red clay ridge tiles and gable ends at both the front and back. The building is positioned with its end facing the road and likely has a two-room plan, with the main room at the front heated by a central stack located on the right side. The entrance is on the left side, leading to a service room at the back.
The exterior is two stories high, with a gable end facing the road. On the ground floor to the right, there is a late 19th or early 20th-century two-light casement window with glazing bars and slate sills. A doorway on the left features a 19th-century flush panel door and a painted stone rubble gabled porch with a segmented arch and a scantle slate roof. There are also 19th or early 20th-century two-light casements on the sides. The small two-story extension at the rear is rendered and has a lean-to roof. The interior has not been inspected.
