Description
The Toll House is a turnpike toll house that has been converted into a dwelling. It dates from the early 19th century and features an ashlar road frontage with rubble on the returns. The roof is slate, hipped to the front and to the rear, with a coped verge and a cruciform finial. Designed in the Tudor style, the building stands two storeys high with a two-bay road front. The first floor has blank window openings beneath stopped labels. On the ground floor, there is a broad central door opening with a 4-centred head, emphasised spandrels, a stopped label, and a panelled door. The door surround slightly projects under a pedimental gable. The returns have single-light and two-light stone-mullioned windows, also with stopped labels. There is a single-storey outshut on the left return. The Toll House is part of the Shepton Mallet Turnpike Trust.
