Description
The Old School House is a former charity school, now a house, built in 1707. It features coursed and squared rubble with some remnants of render, dressed alternating quoins, and a slate roof with coped verges and brick stacks. The building has a symmetrical frontage, is two storeys high with an attic, and consists of five bays. The ground floor has two-light moulded stone-mullioned windows, each with casements, while the first floor has iron casements with leaded lights, except for one light that has a casement like those on the ground floor. Two windows are blocked. The attic features a large central gabled dormer with coping and a two-light stone mullioned window with leaded lights. There are continuous strings over the window heads. The central door opening has a chamfered freestone surround, with a ground floor string raised to form a dripmould, an emphasized key, and a panelled door. Above the door is an incised slate tablet and a cartouche with a helmet and crest. To the left side, there is a single-storey, two-bay outshut with a corrugated-iron sheeting roof and a brick stack, along with two-light stone-mullioned windows, mostly with leaded lights. The forecourt is paved and has stone walls, with central ashlar gate piers featuring moulded caps and ball finials, and paired wrought and cast-iron gates. The interior includes a 19th-century staircase designed in an early 18th-century style. The adjoining house to the right is not of special interest.
