Description

No 1 Sidmouth Street is a building that likely dates from the 17th century but was refaced in the late 18th or early 19th century. It stands two storeys tall on Monday Market Street, with a false third storey that features moulded coping at the splayed corner and Sidmouth Street. The building is constructed from colourwashed brick and has a gable end roof covered with pantiles.

The front facing Monday Market Street has a shallow eaves cornice and a three-light mullioned casement window on the first floor. There are five windows on the splayed corner and Sidmouth Street, with false windows on the second floor. Sill courses are present, and the first floor features sash windows that are three panes wide.

On the ground floor, each of the three fronts displays the frame of an early 19th-century shop front, characterized by thin panelled pilasters flanking the windows and doors, along with a frieze and shaped brackets supporting the cornice above. Three-light mullioned windows are preserved on both Monday Market Street and Sidmouth Street. The splayed corner front includes double partly glazed doors with flush bottom panels, and there is a recessed door with four flush panels to the left on Monday Market Street.

Nos 1 to 10 Sidmouth Street form a cohesive group.
