Description

The Rising Sun Public House, located on School Street in Sidford, is a building that likely dates from the late 18th century but was refaced in the early to mid 19th century. It is two storeys high and has a stucco facade over stone rubble. The front features banded rustication with pilaster strips on either side of a slightly projecting central bay. There is a frieze with a string course, and the gable end roof has an overhanging eave with two gabled dormers. The symmetrical front includes three recessed sash windows on the first floor, which retain their glazing bars. On the ground floor, there are two mid-19th century canted stucco bay windows with cornices that return to the wall and extend across the front. The central entrance is a recessed door with six panels, four of which are glazed, topped by a rectangular fanlight. To the right, there is a slightly lower two-storey wing that is also stucco faced, featuring a low pitch gable end slate roof with overhanging eaves. This wing has three casement windows on the first floor, two later ones below, and a wide garage entrance on the ground floor. The Rising Sun Public House and the adjacent Cornerways form a group.
