Description
Handel House, located at 29 and 30 Sidmouth Street, is an early 19th-century building that stands three storeys tall and is constructed from Bath stone. It features string courses at the first and second floor cill levels, a projecting frieze, and a moulded cornice. The tall parapet is panelled over the windows and includes shallow pilasters between the panels, along with a moulded secondary cornice that breaks forward over the pilasters. The building has a blocking course and three windows on the second floor, each four panes wide, with blind windows positioned between them. The first floor has five windows, each four panes wide and five tall.
The ground floor has a symmetrical shop front with three shop windows that lack glazing bars, and two double doors located in the second and fourth bays. These windows and doors are framed by engaged, fluted Greek Doric columns and wide outer angle piers, which support an entablature across the front. The name of the establishment is painted on the frieze. The return front to Albion Place shares a similar design but has a plain stone ground floor and features two windows flanking two central blind ones on the upper floors, with one window to the left and two blind windows on the ground floor.
At the rear, on Sheep Street, there are two small houses that are now part of the same property. These houses, dating from the 17th century and refaced in the 18th century, are made of red brick with grey headers and also stand three storeys tall. They have a small brick plinth, projecting brick bands between the storeys, and a stepped brick eaves cornice. The gable end has a pantile roof. The upper floors contain two windows, which are three-light stone mullioned casements with red brick dressings and segmental arches, while the first floor windows have grey header relieving arches. The ground floor features two paired 19th-century sash windows with camber heads and plain doors at either end. Timber framing is visible at the rear.
Handel House is part of a group that includes Nos 23 to 28 (consecutive), Nos 1 to 3 (consecutive) on Albion Place, and No 29.
