Description

Nos 8 and 8A on Church Street are two houses that were originally one building, dating from the 14th to 15th century, and have been altered over time. They are constructed of rubble stone with stone slate roofs and are two storeys high, forming an L-shape.

The main range, No 8, features a roof-slope stack and a notable 14th-century pointed arched doorway with a hoodmould and head stops, flanked by later openings. To the left, there is a 16-pane sash window set in an architrave and garage doors, while to the right, there are triple casement windows on both floors, with the upper window showcasing ovolo mullions and leaded lights.

No 8A, which is slightly recessed, has an east end stack and a first-floor window to the left that is a 3-light window with ovolo-moulded timber mullions and leaded lights. To the right, there is a 20-pane fixed window on the ground floor, a central door, and a 40-pane canted shop window on a brick base, with a stone slate hood extending from the shop window over the door.

Inside, No 8 retains remnants of smoke-blackened crucks in the roof, a moulded 15th-century fireplace backing onto the passage, and an 18th-century fireplace in the left room. No 8A features heavy timbers and a fine early 17th-century stone fireplace upstairs, which has fluting and guilloche decoration. Both houses have been heavily modernised.
