Description

The Carpenters Arms is an inn dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, constructed of rubble stone with a hipped stone slate roof. It has two storeys. The main range, which was originally plastered, features five early to mid 18th century first floor thick glazing bar sash windows set in raised moulded surrounds. Above the ground floor, there is a drip course over four squat 16-pane sashes that have been inserted into flush cyma-moulded frames, which were originally designed for mullion windows. The door in the fourth bay is framed by a raised moulded surround topped with a large open pedimental head supported by scroll brackets.

At the left end of the building, there is a lower projecting crosswing that displays 17th century details, including a long first floor two-light window with segment heads and carved spandrels, along with leaded lattice glazing over 9-pane windows. The ground floor features a timber lintel over a doorway in a chamfered surround, which includes a two-light cyma-moulded overlight. The building has a side stack and a stack at the south end. The right end, facing East Street, has a south end stack, one upper sash window similar to those on the front, and a ground floor two-light flush cyma-moulded window. The interior of the ground floor has been completely altered.
