Description
Nos 23 and 24 Church Street are a pair of houses dating from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made around 1900, likely by H. Brakspear. They are constructed of rubble stone, featuring some timber-framing, and have a Bridgwater tile roof with red brick and ashlar stacks added in the 1900s at the centre ridge and one dormer gable. The houses are one and a half storeys tall and each has two dormer gables, which include 18th-century cyma-moulded 2-light recessed mullion windows with dripstones. The gable coping and the left gable stack were remodeled around 1900.
On the ground floor, each house has a central door flanked by mullion windows. No 23 features a 16th-century Tudor-arched door, a 16th-century three-light window with Tudor-arched lights to the right, and a 2-light cyma-moulded recessed mullion window with a hoodmould to the left. No 24 has a door from around 1900 with a cornice and 1900 three-light windows with hoodmoulds. The east end of No 23 retains original framing in the gable and has three-light windows on each floor added in the 1900s. A stone slated rear wing on East Street includes an upper casement and a ground floor with renewed three-light windows and a door, both with hoodmoulds. The west end of No 24 dates from around 1900. The interior has not been inspected.
