Description
Nos 25 and 26 on Church Street are a pair of houses dating from the late medieval period, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. They are constructed from rubble stone and feature a timber-framed crosswing. The houses have a stone slate roof, which includes a ridge stack and a stack at the north-east corner. The buildings are one and a half storeys tall.
The left side has been mostly refronted in the 19th century with squared rubble stone. It features three dormer gables, each with 2-light cyma-moulded recessed mullion windows, although only the right gable retains its original window. On the ground floor, there is a pair of 19th-century casement windows, two 19th-century doors, and one original 2-light mullion window similar to those above. The east end wall has a gable that has been rebuilt in brick, but the ground floor still has a 16th-century two-light chamfered recessed mullion window.
On the right side, No 26 has a door beneath a long timber lintel, indicating a broader original opening, and features a fine crosswing front to the right. The upper part of this section is jettied and supported by large tension braces and a cambered tie-beam. The first floor has a pair of casement windows, while the ground floor includes a pair of casement windows with a horizontal sliding shutter, brick jambs, and rubble stone below. The interior has not been inspected.
