Description

Wellbank House and Forge Cottage are a pair of houses dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations likely made in the 19th century and subsequent subdivision. The structure is built on a cruck-frame, originally cased in coursed rubble chalk, with later brick additions; a brick gable wall and brick quoins are also present on the left side. The roof is covered with pantiles, and there are brick stacks. Originally designed with a three-cell, hearth-passage plan, the front of the houses is two storeys high. A 20th-century door is situated in the original opening to the right of centre, with a 20th-century casement window to its right. A later-inserted six-panel door is located to the left of centre, flanked by two-light, small-pane, horizontal sliding sash windows. A blocked firewindow is visible to the left of the original door. Later inserted first-floor windows include a 20th-century sliding sash to the left and a casement to the right. All ground-floor openings have painted wedge lintels. The gables are coped, and there are shaped kneelers. The left gable wall features two keyed window openings with gauged brick arches, as well as end and right-of-centre stacks.
