Description
Nos 7 and 8 on High Street are a pair of houses dating from around 1600. They are timber-framed with plaster panels set on a rubble stone plinth. The houses have a plain tile roof featuring a 19th-century ridge stack and a north end stack on the front slope.
The buildings are two storeys tall and form a long three-window range with a continuously jettied upper floor. The ground floor is close-studded, while the first floor has square framing, with each panel displaying concave-sided lozenge decoration, which is unusual for Wiltshire. All the windows were renewed in the late 19th century and feature leaded cross-windows. The three upper windows are set under small gablets, a feature that originated in the 19th century.
On the ground floor, there is a cross-window and a plank door leading to No 7, a cross-window, and a 19th-century plank door leading to a through passage, as well as a 5-light transomed window. The rear of the houses reveals exposed framing and three 19th-century pointed gabled dormers. Inside, the ground floor has heavy chamfered beams with bar stops, and No 7 contains a mid-18th-century corner fireplace with a fluted keystone. It is likely that No 7 served as the hall and parlour range, while No 8 functioned as the kitchen of a single house.
