Description

The Corner House is a house dating from the early 17th century, built on a late medieval core. It features rubble stone construction with some timber-framing and stone slate roofs. The main two-storey range from the 17th century has a ridge stack and two gables facing Church Street. It includes long stone-mullioned windows with ovolo moulding and hoodmoulds. The left side has three-light windows on each floor, while the right side has four-light windows with a king mullion on each floor. The west end gable features a similar three-light window above two paired two-light windows under one hoodmould. A short rear wing connects with a door and a two-light window above. The north end wall has a three-light timber-mullioned window on the ground floor and a similar four-light window above. The gable is timber framed. A larger rear wing to the east has exposed framing on the west side and a roughcast finish on the north end. To the right of the main front is a low timber-frame and red brick range that shares a continuous roof with No 3.

Inside, the right section and part of the 17th-century range contain three full cruck trusses, possibly from a 14th-century hall house, now partly within No 3. The 17th-century range features a finely panelled southwest room with the initials GC 1633 inscribed, a moulded Tudor-arched fireplace, and a finely moulded beam with unusual carved stops. There is also one moulded Tudor-arched fireplace upstairs.
