Description
1 and 2 Market Street is a house that has been divided into two residences. It likely dates from the late 17th century or earlier, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building is constructed from local stone rubble and roughcast, topped with a steep asbestos slate roof that has gabled ends. There are two rear lateral stacks with rendered shafts; the right end stack features a rendered shaft and a platband, while the front right stack has a roughcast shaft with a platband that projects through the roof.
The original plan of the building was probably a three-room and through-passage layout, with the lower end located to the left (No. 2). Both the lower end and hall are heated by the rear lateral stacks, and remnants of a cartway suggest the location of the former passage. Each house has a secondary rear wing.
The exterior of the building is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front featuring two windows on one side and three on the other. No. 1 has a front door situated to the right side of an internal porch, while No. 2 has a half-glazed 20th-century door on the left. The ground-floor windows are small-pane timber casements, likely from the 20th century, and there are five first-floor windows that are 4-pane late 19th-century or early 20th-century horned sashes.
Inside No. 2, the ground floor features a late 17th-century chamfered step-stopped cross beam and a half beam at the junction with No. 3. The fireplace associated with the lateral stack has a 20th-century lintel and jambs. The first floor and roof have not been inspected but may hold historical interest, as the steep pitch of the roof suggests it could be from the 17th century or earlier. Other notable internal features are likely hidden behind modern plaster.
