Description

No. 4 Market Street is a house that likely originated around 1700 or earlier, possibly built in conjunction with No. 3 Market Street, which is to the right. The building features mixed construction, primarily consisting of mass wall with some timber-framing. The front elevation is made of local grey limestone rubble with brick dressings, while the right side under the cartway is timber-framed. The roof is slate and gabled at both ends.

The house has a single-depth plan that is two rooms wide, with a winder stair located at the rear. There is a door on the right side under the cartway. The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical two-window front. The ground-floor window on the right is a four-light casement with three panes per light and a segmental brick arch. The left ground-floor window is a two-light casement with eight panes per light and a flat brick arch. On the first floor, there are two three-light casements, each with three panes per light and timber lintels. A 20th-century door is located under the cartway to the right. The cartway is lined with a bead-moulded plank-and-muntin screen, which is a rare survival, although the lower part is obscured by later horizontal boarding.

Inside, the house has been modernised but retains a 19th-century winder stair with a landing at the rear. The roof, likely from the 18th century, features steeply cambered halved pegged collars, with principals halved and pegged at the apex, and trenched purlins.
