Description
No. 3 Market Street is a house, likely built around 1700 or earlier, originally part of a structure that included No. 4 to the left. It has undergone later alterations due to subdivision. The building features mixed construction, primarily mass wall with some timber-framing. The ground floor is made of local grey limestone rubble, while the first floor is slate-hung at the front and at the rear, with the rear wing being timber-framed and also slate-hung at the first-floor level. The roof is slate and gabled at both ends.
The house has an L-shaped plan, with the main block being single-depth and a rear right wing at right angles, associated with a rear court and a cartway to the left. The exterior is three storeys tall, though it was probably originally two storeys. The front is asymmetrical, featuring one window on the ground floor, two on the first floor, and three on the second. The ground floor has a shallow 20th-century small-pane timber bow window, while the first and second floors have small-pane 20th-century casements. There is a half-glazed door leading into the rear wing from the rear court.
Inside, the building has been modernised, featuring back-to-back corner fireplaces with renewed lintels. Most of the first-floor partitions are from the 20th century. The roof is likely from the 18th century, with halved pegged collars, halved and pegged principals at the apex, and trenched purlins. The rear wing roof is similar, with exposed wall framing in the gable end made of stout scantling.
