Description
A pair of houses on Hailes Street, likely dating from the 17th century, with significant alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. The houses are constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with No. 47 having an ashlar front. No. 47 has a stone slate roof, while No. 49 has an artificial stone slate roof. No. 47 features a rear lateral stack, and No. 49 has a right-end stack. Each house has a two-room plan and similar height to the eaves, with No. 47 being two storeys high and No. 49 being one storey with an attic. No. 47 includes a doorway leading to a through passage on the left side and early 20th-century two- and three-light casement windows. No. 49 features a mid-20th-century central door flanked by two-light stone-mullioned windows, with mid-20th-century casements in the gabled dormers. The interiors of No. 47 include chamfered stone jambs to a lateral fireplace with a reused bressumer, plain and chamfered beams, and a quarter-turn staircase with winders. No. 49 has a chamfered ground-floor beam and stop-chamfered bressumer over an open fireplace with stop-chamfered jambs. Exposed tie beams of a three-bay roof, which extends into the roof of No. 47, are visible. Late 20th-century rear wings have been added.
