Description
The building is a public library, originally constructed as a Workmen's Institute between 1879 and 1880 for James Sadler. It is made of squared coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The structure has three storeys and three bays, with a gabled three-storey front wing that contains the entrance and stair, as well as a caretaker's dwelling attached to the rear.
The entrance door is located in the front wing and is set under a carved canopy supported by columns. The windows have cambered moulded heads and timber paned frames. The stair gable is adorned with quatrefoils made from stone salvaged from a former school house on the site, inscribed with the names Miriam Stevens, M. STEVENS, 1779, and J.S. & A.M.S. 1879. A clock face is positioned in the pediment, and the right end of the building features a large ground floor bow window. Additionally, there is a bell turret with a timber balustrade and wind vane. This building occupies an important pivotal point in the centre of Purton.
