Description
This is a late 19th century public library situated on Main Street, Uddingston. The building is a two-storey structure with an attic, arranged in a symmetrical rectangular plan with five bays. It is constructed from polished red sandstone ashlar, with channelled stonework at ground level. The north side and rear are built from stugged and snecked squared rubble, with polished ashlar dressings. Features include a base course, a band course between the ground and first floors, a cill course to the first floor, an eaves course, and a cornice. A decorative wrought-iron railing runs along the roof ridge. The first-floor windows have keystoned margins, and the dormers have segmental pediments.
The east (principal) elevation features a pilastered and corniced round-arched doorpiece with keystones, panelled spandrels, flanking dies, a window above the doorpiece, and two dormer windows set between the outer bays in the attic. A window is present in each bay flanking the doorpiece.
The west (rear) elevation is irregularly fenestrated with three bays, including a stair window in the central bay and various single and bipartite windows in the flanking bays. A wide wallhead stack is located to the right, and a dormer window is to the left. Lean-to and piend-roofed additions, along with a high coped screen wall, abut the main block to the outer left.
The south (side) elevation is near-symmetrical with three bays, featuring a single window in each bay on both floors and a dormer window set to the left of centre. A tall wallhead stack is positioned to the right of centre.
The north (side) elevation is a blank gable with a tall coped screen wall to the left and a multi-flue gablehead stack.
The windows are replacement two-pane timber sash and case windows, with a fixed stair window at the rear. The roof is grey slate, pitched and piended, with slate also covering the lean-to and piend-roofed additions at the rear. The ashlar stacks are coped, with one at the rear being redundant. Ashlar coped skews are visible on the north gable. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, with some replacements being uPVC at the rear.
The interior has undergone refurbishment and later partitioning on the ground floor. Original architraves remain around doorways, and some timber panelled doors are still in place. Book alcoves and window bays feature architraves. Shutters and skirting boards are extant. The staircase has decorative cast-iron balusters with a painted timber handrail. Decorative cornices, door and window architraves, and panels in the window bays are found upstairs, along with a simple inscribed marble fireplace in the main room.
Low squared rubble sandstone boundary walls with curved ashlar copes, decorative wrought-iron railings (missing from the north wall), and a single gate are part of the site.
