Description
The Former Lorimer Library, located at 52-54 Montgomerie Street, was designed by Gabriel Andrew in 1879. This single-storey library features a roughly cruciform plan with gabled roofs and neo-Norman detailing. The front has a large canted gable bay and round-arched windows. The building is constructed of red sandstone ashlar, with random rubble on the sides and rear, and includes a rubble base course, projecting window cills, and an eaves course. The window and door margins are roll-moulded, and there are moulded skewputts on the central gable.
On the west elevation, which is the principal facade, there is a hoodmoulded tripartite window in the central advanced gable, featuring a tall central light and pilaster mullions. Above the window, "THE LORIMER LIBRARY" is inscribed in raised stone, with a semi-circular hood-mould above that has carved ball stops. The gable apex includes a moulded roundel, possibly intended for a clock face. The canted sides have hoodmoulded round-arched windows. Recessed wings flank the central gable; the left wing has a timber-boarded door with a fanlight, while the right wing contains a window.
The other elevations include gables to the north and east, and an M-gabled roof to the south, with a later addition at the southeast corner. The windows are fitted with plate glass in timber sash and case frames. The building features coped, shouldered stacks with some octagonal yellow clay cans, ashlar-coped skews, and a roof covered with graded grey slate.
