Description
The Bachelors' Club on Sandgate Street in Tarbolton is a 17th-century house that has undergone later alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure with a rectangular plan, featuring whitewashed rubble walls and a straw thatched roof with a raised reed thatched ridge. The eaves are adorned with a modillion course.
On the north elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a central square-headed entrance with a panelled timber door. To the left, there is a single window with a timber shutter, and to the right, an additional entrance with another panelled timber door. The first floor has two single windows with a plaque for the Bachelors' Club positioned between them.
The east elevation has a single window on the left at ground floor and another on the right at first floor, with the ground floor window having a timber shutter. A recessed stair on the outer left provides access to the first floor and features a timber handrail.
The south elevation includes an external stair leading to the first floor, flanked by single windows on the first floor. There is an infilled opening to the left at ground floor, along with single windows at both ground and first floors on the outer left.
The windows throughout the building are small-paned timber, with some being sash and case. The house has painted brick gablehead stacks, with circular cans present on the left side only.
Inside, the ground floor reflects a reconstruction of its use from the time of Robert Burns. It is divided into a byre and kitchen, featuring a stone floor, a timber dado ceiling, and dado panelling on the south wall. The west wall contains the byre, while the east wall has a plain corniced fireplace and grate. The first floor serves as a debating room, with a timber floor and a whitewashed flat ceiling, along with plain square-headed fireplaces on the east and west walls.
Additionally, there is a whitewashed boundary wall to the east of the house.
