Description
This is a milestone located 100 meters south of the junction with The Avenue on Devizes Road in South Newton. It dates from the late 18th century and is made of limestone with a chamfered face. The milestone features a cast-iron plate on the front, which is inscribed with the distances to Salisbury (3 miles) and Devizes (20 miles). This road was turnpiked between 1760 and 1762, providing a route over the Plain via Urchfont.
