Description

The model farm buildings at Avon Farm date from the late 19th century and are constructed of Flemish bond yellow brick, with some sections in English bond, topped with Welsh slate roofs and brick stacks featuring gauged brick capping. The buildings are arranged in an E-plan layout, with cart sheds and machinery stores located on the outside of the north range, while feed stores and cowsheds open onto two yards. They are single-storey structures with attics.

The west range features Tudor-arched doorways and flat-arched windows adorned with cast-iron Gothic glazing bars. It has a hipped dormer on the roof and a pyramidal roof vent with shouldered louvres. The north range includes four large Tudor-arched cart entries, an open-fronted barn, and a cart shed on the north side, as well as three gablets with cusped vents on the roof. A covered passage with a slate roof on the south side of the north range connects doors facing the yards.

The middle range contains a 20th-century milking parlour, which has been partly inserted into an open-fronted shelter shed. The east range features stable doors and flat-arched windows with cast-iron Gothic glazing bars on horizontal sashes, with alternate glazed lights; its outer facade is windowless and has recessed panels in Flemish bond. Inside, the buildings have stone floors and planked doors. This site is a well-preserved example of a model farm in the Salisbury area.
