Description
57 Fore Street is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with a rear wing added in the 16th century and alterations made in the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building was originally timber-framed and is supported by limestone rubble and brick. It features a gabled pantile roof and brick stacks, forming an L-shape with the rear wing. The front elevation has one small and one large gable, likely from the 17th century, along with a continuous shop front from the mid-20th century.
Inside, the front range from the 15th century has a butt-purlin roof with chamfered purlins and wind braces, common rafters, and an off-centre closed collar truss. There is a former open hall to the right, which has pointed-arched windbracing but has been truncated at the right-hand end. The rear section features an early 16th-century two-bay collar-truss roof.
