CHITTERNE SHREWTON ROAD SU 04 SW (south side) 5/25 Milestone about 30 metres east of entrance to track to Chitterne Barn II Milestone. Mid C18. Limestone pillar with pitched top and inscribed lettering to front: LXXXVII / Miles From / London / IX / From / Amesbury. The London road between Willoughby Hedge and Amesbury was turnpiked under an Act of 1760-62. (VCH, Wiltshire, Vol 4. 1959)
