Description

This milestone, located about 30 meters east of the entrance to the track leading to Chitterne Barn, dates from the mid-18th century. It is made of limestone and features a pitched top with inscribed lettering on the front that reads: "LXXXVII / Miles From / London / IX / From / Amesbury." The London road between Willoughby Hedge and Amesbury was turnpiked under an Act passed between 1760 and 1762.
