Description

Milestone located on the north side of the A303 in Stockton, dating from the late 18th century. This limestone pillar features a pitched top and has incised lettering on the front indicating "LXXXIX / Miles from / LONDON / XI / from / Amesbury." The road between Amesbury and Willoughby Hedge was turnpiked between 1760 and 1762.
