Description
38 Catherine Street is a building dating from 1594, with an early 19th-century front that conceals a 16th-century timber frame. The structure is three storeys high, built of red brick, and features a painted stucco band between the storeys. It has a stuccoed frieze, a projecting plain leaded wood cornice, and a stucco parapet with coping. The upper floors have two recessed sash windows without glazing bars, topped by segmental brick arches and later metal window boxes. The ground floor has an early 20th-century shop front. Inside, at the rear, there is a six-bay range extending to the west, with an exposed frame on the first floor that includes wall posts, tie beams, trusses, principals, and collars. At the east end, there are remains of a cross range. This building is part of a group that includes Nos 26 to 40 (even) and Nos 46 to 54 (even).
