Description
27 and 29 Catherine Street are houses with shops, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with alterations made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The buildings are timber-framed with a painted mathematical tile front, while the rear is finished with tile and slate hanging. They feature plain tile hipped roofs. Number 29, located on the right (south), is from the late 17th century and has been partly refronted in the 20th century, while number 27 on the left is from the early 18th century. Both buildings are two storeys high with an attic and have 20th-century shop fronts on the ground floor. The first floor of number 27 has a painted mathematical tile front with a cornice and rendered parapet, along with three 4-pane sash windows. The right bay features a large plate glass display window on the first floor and a stepped parapet. There are dormers present as well. At the rear, number 27 has an adjoining wing that is tile hung on the left with a hipped roof, while number 29 has a slate-hung wing on the right with a half-hipped roof and a flat roof extension. Inside, number 27 contains mid-19th century stick baluster stairs leading from the first floor to the attic. Number 29 features various chamfered beams on the ground floor, a chamfered cross-beam on the first floor with run-out stops, and an 18th-century staircase leading to the attic, which has scratch-moulded panelling on the side. There is also a similarly moulded panelled door on the first floor.
