Description
Avon Cottage is a house dating from the 15th to 16th century, with extensions added in the 17th century. It features a timber frame with wattle and daub and brick infilling, topped by a thatched roof. The building is single storey with attics and has a layout of two and a half bays. The framing consists of three panels high, with straight corner braces in the centre half bay and two bays to the right, while the earlier left bays have more slender and irregular timbering. There is a door in the left end bay, which is sheltered by a 20th-century propped canopy. The windows are timber with panes, and there are three flush dormers.
The interior was likely converted to a lobby entry plan when the two 17th-century southern bays were added. The left two bays are of cruck construction, possibly part of a larger three-bay house, with gable crucks surviving above the first floor and full-height couples in the second bay. A pegged bearing rail in the left bay suggests that the first floor may have been added to an open bay. The roof features long curved windbraces supporting a single purlin. The stack bay and left bays appear to be contemporary from the late 17th century, with a staircase behind the stack that has a splat baluster handrail leading to the first floor. The ground floor fireplace is blocked, but there is a good brick fireplace with a herringbone reredos at the first floor level. The third bay contains a significant 17th-century parlour, featuring a spine beam with a rounded chamfer stop and a raised lozenge. The fourth bay is likely a service room, which has a roughly chamfered spine beam.
