Description

Hotspur House is a house dating from the late 16th to 17th century. It is timber framed with wattle and daub infilling, although some of this has been replaced with colourwashed brick. The house has a thatched roof and is single storey with an attic, though it was partly raised to two storeys later in the 17th century. The building consists of three and a half bays, featuring a central hall bay with a stack in the half-bay to the north and a service bay at the rear. To the south is a third bay, which may have originally served as a parlour.

The framing is set on a sarsen sill and consists of three panels high, with the lower two panels featuring square framing. Above this is a heavy bressumer, an upper panel of close studding, and ogee corner braces. The wall plate is outset and chamfered. The hall and the bay to the south have been raised by an additional two panels of rectangular framing, which also include ogee braces. Some original timber windows with dowelled moulded heads are present but now blocked, alongside later timber casement windows. There are weathered hood boards over the bressumer, wall plate, and upper windows. A pantiled weatherboarded lean-to is located on the south gable. Inside, there are chamfered ceiling beams, and the fireplaces have been blocked, although the interior was not seen in detail.
