Teazle House Attached To West Of Quemerford House

Teazle House, attached to the west of Quemerford House, is a possible former fulling mill that has been on this site since 1646 and was likely rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of squared, coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a gable stack and a double Roman tile roof. It has a single-depth plan and is designed in the Tudor Revival style, standing two storeys tall with an attic and a one-window range.

The structure spans a stream and is supported by two shallow segmental brick arches. The north elevation showcases a large central three-light stone-mullioned and transomed window that extends below the ground floor, featuring segmental-arched heads, sunken spandrels, and a label mould. There is a similar mullion window on the second floor, although the outer light is blocked, with small glazing bars in the middle lights. The south elevation has a comparable first-floor mullion window, a central second-floor segmental-arched window with an ashlar surround, and a small paired right-hand window with round arches.

The entrance gable is coped and has a flight of steps leading up to the raised ground floor. It features a plain ashlar surround to a segmental-arched doorway, along with three-light first- and second-floor four-centre-arched windows, where the outer ones are blocked. To the left of the steps, there is a blocked round-arched opening that leads to the space beneath the mill. The building also has four decorative wrought-iron ties.

Inside, the details include a dogleg stair to the left of the entrance, with internal stud partitions creating small rooms, one of which is a full-width room at the house end. There is also a ladder leading up to the attic, which features a trussed roof with wide boards and a plank ridge. Teazle House is an interesting example of a small water-powered site, showcasing considerable architectural interest and having group value with Quemerford Mill.
