Description

CALNE

SU0069 QUEMERFORD 755-1/7/135 (South side) Teazle House attached to west of Quemerford House

GV II

Possible former fulling mill. Site occupied since 1646, probably rebuilt mid C19. Squared, coursed limestone rubble and ashlar dressings, gable stack and double Roman tile roof. Single-depth plan. Tudor Revival style. 2 storeys and attic; 1-window range. Built across the stream with 2 shallow segmental brick arches; N elevation has a large central 3-light stone-mullioned and transomed window extending below the ground floor, with segmental-arched heads, sunken spandrels and a label mould; similar mullion window to the second floor, the outer light blocked, small glazing bars to the middle ones. S elevation has a similar first-floor mullion window, a central second-floor segmental-arched window with ashlar surround, and a small paired right-hand window with round-arches. The entrance gable is coped, with a flight of steps up to the raised ground floor, a plain ashlar surround to a segmental-arched doorway, and 3-light first- and second-floor 4-centre-arched windows, the outer ones blocked. To the left of the steps, a blocked round-arched opening to the space beneath the mill. 4 decorative wrought-iron ties. INTERIOR: details include a dogleg stair to the left of the entrance, with internal stud partitions forming small rooms, one full-width room to the house end, and a ladder up to the attic, with a trussed roof with wide boards and a plank ridge. An interesting example of a small water-powered site, with considerable architectural interest, and group value with Quemerford Mill (qv). (Wiltshire Buildings Record: Trowbridge: 1991-).
